Dr. Harold Temperton
Dr. Harold Temperton. 1913-1984

The Temperton Fellowship

Translating high academic recognition into easy public understanding...

The Temperton Fellowship was established to commemorate the contribution of Dr. Harold Temperton, Director of the National Institute of Poultry Husbandry at Harper Adams Agricultural College from 1951 to 1974. It is financed by the accrued annual interest from the Temperton Trust investments deriving from contributions, donations as well as proceeds from the sale of a book, The History of the National Institute of Poultry Husbandry, by M E Telford, P H Hoiroyd, R G Wells, published by Harper Adams Agricultural College, September 1986.

Value

The Fellowship is intended to extend the expertise which already exists in the industry and combine that with the resources in terms of staff and facilities which exist at the College.

As the financial value of the award is relatively small, it is anticipated that the successful recipient is likely to be self-financing in terms of salary and is likely to be the owner or an employee of a firm or organisation anxious to capitalise on the opportunity to extend his/her research programme, perhaps on a secondment arrangement.

Selection

The selection committee has no wish to be prescriptive or target particular subjects for recipients to pursue. It therefore invites applicants to submit to them detailed proposals of the study together with their own personal details and motivation for applying for the award. The selection is made on the basis of these criteria.

Type of Awards

Two types of award were envisaged:

1. Research Study

This will enable suitably qualified and motivated candidates in industry to pursue a research topic of their interest under the supervision of a member of staff at Harper Adams Agricultural College. Candidates would be encouraged to spend at least 60 days at Harper Adams on an individual daily basis, e.g. 1 day/fortnight over 2 years or similar (the fellowship committee would allow latitude on this point to accommodate individual cases), or on a longer basis as dictated by the demand of the study and spread over a period of up to 2 years. Opportunities and facilities exist for those candidates wishing to develop this opportunity further to register for a higher degree (part-time).

2. Strategic Study

This will enable experienced individuals in the industry to finance a study period either at home or abroad in pursuit of information/evidence to support the preparation of a report which will have a strategic benefit for the future well-being of the poultry industry. Those individuals involved in the politics/policy-making elements of the poultry industry are encouraged to apply as well as those directing large and influential poultry-related businesses. There will be no requirement to spend time studying at Harper Adams other than for normal supervisory guidance.
