An example of Continual Professional Development (CPD) as a driver for accreditation:

BASIS is an independent organisation set up 1978 to establish and assess standards in the pesticide industry relating to storage, transport and competence of staff. BASIS operate a professional register for pesticide and fertiliser advisors who hold a BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection (30 credits) and FACTS Certificate (15 credits) respectively. Members must also commit to CPD and there are additional modules staff can attain both for internal CPD points and also Higher Education credits.

An example of accreditation of a Company's training needs:

This is an excellent example of a company already providing training for its industry but recognising the value of adding academic rigour to a successful programme by working with Harper Adams University College to launch a ground-breaking postgraduate qualification.

The member-led MDS training programme is designed for graduate trainees seeking a management career with the fresh produce sector and includes four, 6-month management secondments within the 26 member companies. Between the secondments trainees also attend 27 days of management development training provided by independent training providers and complete reports and work-based projects, produce a personal development plan and write a synoptic paper for the postgraduate certificate.

National Grid

Land Officer University College Diploma

Example of accreditation of a Company's training needs:

This is an example of a company recognising a training need for its employees and seeking external provision. National Grid found Harper Adams offered experience and expertise in the sector and had the facilities and willingness to engage. With dialogue the course was designed and piloted. The primary role of the course consisting of seven 5-10 credit modules is to provide underpinning knowledge and understanding of agriculture and rural practices for Lands Officers.

National Grid wanted the course accredited for quality assurance, staff motivation and added value.

A module was piloted in June 2008 in the form of a two-day course which had very positive feedback. 2009 was the first year of the programme with 10-16 participants within a cohort. The courses are delivered in the field and classroom utilising case studies and examples with support online from pre-course study and reference material. Assessment is via multiple choice examination, work based projects and critical commentaries.

An additional element to the programme is the opportunity to facilitate the achievement of a Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors professional standard (AssocRICS). Participants will collate a portfolio of learning and practice with support and guidance from Harper Adams and the National Grid which will then be submitted to the RICS for consideration.

Quorum Logistic Support Limited

University College Diploma in Reliability Engineering

Harper Adams have partnered Quorum Logistic Support Limited in Telford and developed a new course, the University College Diploma in Reliability Engineering. The course is due to run from September 2011 to March 2013.

Harper Adams has a successful history working with local industries and its Engineering Department continues to respond to the changing market in workplace staff development.
