Further Study - How do I go about it?
There are a variety of reasons why people go into further study. Some are enthusiastic about their subject for others it is pre-requisite for their chosen career .Some may use it to delay making the career decision.
Things to think about:
- Be clear about why you want to do further study and how far it fits in with your career planning.
- How are you going to fund it/You will usually need to find fees as well as living expenses, although funding id available for some courses.
- Have you reached the academic requirements and/or relevant work experience for entry to your chosen course.
- Researching courses will take time and effort. Some courses require early application for example primary teaching.
Where to get advice:
- Book an appointment with the careers adviser early in the Autumn.
- Talk to relevant academic staff. Ask about the destinations of past students.
- Attend Postgraduate Fairs check these out at www.prospects.ac.uk.
- The AGCAS booklet on postgraduate study and a Prospects booklet on funding are available free from the Careers Service.
- Prospects produce free postgraduate bulletins available from the Careers Service.
- Reference books such as the Education Grants Directory are available from the Careers Resource Area in the Aspire building.
