Welcome to the E-learning Department

We provide a range of services for students and staff (both on and off campus) in order to enhance the learning experience of our users.

We aim to keep staff informed of exciting new developments in the field with the view of demonstrating how these technologies may supplement their teaching.

We provide advice, support, training and also welcome opportunities for collaborative projects to assist staff in exploring new technologies for teaching and learning.

Portfolio of services

  • Management of our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) HarperMoodle, a key component of the institutional Managed Learning Environment, together with the Student Record System and Library Services
  • Management of Mahara, a college-wide e-Portfolio solution used as a student-centred learning and personal development platform
  • Production of multimedia based learning objects (mainly videos), hosted on a streaming server and accessed via the VLE
  • General Web-site development as exemplified by the Virtual Farm or the College Image Gallery
  • Access to a range of software such as Adobe CS4 Master Collection (incl. Flash), Captivate, Articulate and the Serif Design Suite to create re-useable learning objects
  • Provision of regular staff and student training sessions, complemented by an effective peer-support system
  • Support for use of interactive classroom technology such as the Electronic Voting System Qwizdom ActionPoint, a tablet PC, Interactive Whiteboard, digital voice recorders and pocket (HD) camcorders (and increasingly mobile multimedia devices such as the Apple iPhone 3GS) to encourage and facilitate media production by students
  • Research into the use of new technologies such as pod/vod-casting to support off-campus learning
  • Collaboration with early adopters both at Harper and at external institutions to explore the use of Web2.0 technology, centred around social networking and collaborative authoring paradigms
  • Dissemination of examples of best practice both internally and externally

The People

The e-learning team consists of Henry Keil, Carl Kennard and Stephen Spencer with additional input from Mark Walker. The local network and server infrastructure is managed and maintained by the ICT team with Martyn Reid, Howard Robinson and David Holland.

A close collaboration between the two teams ensures that a secure, robust and effective online learning environment is offered to all students and staff at Harper Adams.
