Harper Adams University College is to be the home of the West Midlands Regional Food Academy, which will be open by Autumn 2009 and have a variety of roles. It will serve the food industry in theWest Midlands by providing training and staff development as well as technical services. It will also be a resource for schools and provide the opportunity for pupils to connect with the food supply chain and the work of the food industry. Importantly, it will provide a resource for the specialist food courses offered by Harper Adams.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students will have access to a range of food processing equipment for use in practical sessions, which will develop their understanding of the principles of food processing and preservation. They will be able to make cheeses and beers as well as learn how to make baked goods and other preserved foods. Using the food product development and sensory evaluation facilities they will be able to develop their skills in new food product design and development. They will also gain insight to specialised products such as fresh produce, ready meals, confectionery and snack foods, as well as more traditional products such as cured and smoked meats, jams and preserves, etc.

Through the resources of theWest Midlands Regional Food Academy, Harper Adams's specialist food graduates will develop the practical abilities required to make food products, not just talk about them.
