International students can be found on a wide range of our courses and are easily able to integrate into academic life on campus. Students are encouraged to study with other students outside of their friendship groups on things like joint projects to enable a much wider perspective.
English language support is available to all students whose first language is not English. These classes take place outside of normal lecture times so not to disrupt learning on your main course of study. One-to-one tutorials can also be booked on request. There are also pre-sessional English language courses, ranging in duration from six months to six weeks, depending on a student's English language ability.
All international students (regardless of their visa) who commence studies at the start of the academic year are invited to attend pre-sessional programme designed to help them settle in to life on campus and to discover the local area. They will also be able to access English language and study skills support to help them to prepare for the start of their course. Relevant students will be invited as part of their course offer – for some students, attendance will be mandatory.
Harper Adams is situated on a beautiful rural campus in Shropshire, a few miles from the market town of Newport, which provides everyday shopping and leisure facilities. There are bus links to nearby towns and rail links in Telford, Shrewsbury and Stafford to all major cities. At weekends, the University provides a regular minibus service for shopping and links with further onward travel. We also offer a bike hire scheme to help students make their way around the campus and nearby area.
The International Office and Student Services are able to help with searching for part-time employment and gaining access to services such as health care and where applicable, schooling for dependants.
The majority of students in their first year of study are resident on campus and where possible priority is given to those arriving from overseas. We offer a variety of accommodation choices depending on your budget and personal preferences, ranging from catered en-suite single rooms, to self-catered shared student houses. Students are allocated rooms based on their time of application, which ensures a diverse mix of students in all halls. If you are living off campus, Student Services will be able to assist in finding suitable accommodation in the local area, including where accommodation is required to include family members.
The university has an active Students' Union that organises events all year round both on and off campus, including a wide variety of sports, visiting speakers, music and parties, which are accessible to all students. They also organise the Summer Ball which is the key event of the social calendar and takes place each June.
The International Society is just one of the many organised clubs. It provides additional trips and events for international students to help them see the UK, get to know British culture and make friends. 'Planet Harper' is a home for all students, regardless of their origin, where they can come together to learn about and celebrate the traditions and cultures of the vast number of nationalities who are based at Harper Adams. The activities are supported by the International Office.
