By choosing the business course, I’m learning skills that are transferable beyond agriculture should they be needed.

A monthly special featuring a current student from Harper Adams.

When faced with the opportunity of staying on campus for his placement year, Phil Sutton-Green was more than happy to rise to the challenge of working for the Harper Adams Marketing and Communications Department.

The 20-year-old is working as a Marketing Assistant, helping out with shows and events, advertising enquiries and general marketing tasks. He will also be producing the highly successful Alternative Prospectus (AP) publication later this year.

Phil from Outwoods near Newport, Shropshire, said; “I applied for the placement because I wanted an all-round experience and to learn some new skills that will be useful in my future career.

“Helping out with the shows and events really appealed to me because it’s a chance to travel the country and to make new industry contacts.

“I’m now looking forward to really taking ownership of the AP and making it the best one yet. It will be great to see something that I’ve worked on being distributed to prospective students.”

Phil originally applied to study Agriculture at Harper Adams, but after some thought, changed direction and chose the BSc (Hons) Business Management and Marketing degree.

He said: “I knew I wanted to come to Harper but wasn’t quite sure which course was right for me. By choosing the business course, I’m learning skills that are transferable beyond agriculture should they be needed.

“I’m not from a farming background, but everyone is so friendly here that it really doesn’t matter, as long as you have a genuine love for the countryside.”

At the moment, Phil is concentrating on his degree, with his graduation scheduled for September 2013.

He hopes that once he’s settled in a graduate position, he can re-kindle his love for playing table tennis and other sports.

Phil will be attending various events around the country. To see when the Harper Adams trailer and Marketing team will be visiting your area, see here and here.
