Harper Adams welcomes students from the European Union (EU)

Why study at an English University?

There is now a great opportunity for EU students to take advantage of the fee arrangements to take up university study in England. There are a number of specialist university institutions which offer the highest quality teaching and advanced technical facilities, which enable students to have a quality educational experience.

There is also the great advantage of having the opportunity to improve your English language to a level of complete proficiency. These combined benefits enhance students' international opportunities.

What is Harper Adams University College?

Harper Adams was founded in 1901 and has become the UK's premier provider of Higher Education for the agricultural, food and rural industries. 1800 students are now registered at the University College in Shropshire. We have been recognised as a Centre of Excellence for Teaching and Learning by the Government's Department of Education and now enjoy a towering reputation within the relevant industries of the UK. We now wish to make the opportunity of studying at one of the best equipped university colleges in the UK available to EU students.

What courses are available?

There are opportunities both at postgraduate and undergraduate level. We would consider the following particularly suitable:

Postgraduate Courses

Admission to these courses requires a good Honours degree from a recognised university and a standard of 6.0 in the IELTS language test (or comparable qualification).

The courses run for one academic year i.e. from September 2009 until July 2010.

Undergraduate Courses

Full information on all Harper Adams' courses can be viewed by clicking here, the following courses are particularly recommended:

These are four year sandwich degrees (a sandwich course is one where there is a 12 month placement period in the middle).

For admission to these courses students will be expected to have achieved an examination standard comparable with passes in English/Welsh 'A' Levels. This could be matriculation in a national examination or The International Baccalaureate (IB). You must also be able to prove competence in English language to the level of 5.5 in the IELTS language test (or comparable qualification). Please contact Richard Jopling for individual advice on your entry standard.

All applications are made via the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Further information on this application process is contained in the Harper Adams Undergraduate Prospectus or can be obtained from The UCAS website (www.ucas.com).

How much do I have to pay?

The good news is that as a member of an EU state you enjoy the benefits of discounted fees.

Information about the tuition fees for the current academic year can be found at:

There are also other expenses you must expect to take on in respect to studying in England and you need to be aware of these as indicated in the following estimates:

  • We can provide you with accommodation and meals during the term times. As a standard, an average room in College is £125 per week. This provides you with good quality accommodation and three meals a day for Monday through to Friday. It also includes laundry and all services such as electricity. It is worth noting that there are 32 weeks in the College year. We can also offer self catering accommodation.
  • You will need some cash for out of pocket expenses. These include buying meals at the weekend, books and clothing, entertainments, travel etc.

How can I pay for it all?

  • Students will normally either borrow money through student loans and/or be funded by their families. Visit the website for the Student Loan Company for further information: www.slc.co.uk
  • There are some limited opportunities to earn money by working on the campus or by taking occasional work off campus. Prospective students are advised to note that part-time work will help with the student's out of pocket expenses but is not enough to meet the cost of fees.
  • In the case of exceptionally strong candidates Harper Adam may be able to provide a merit scholarship.

Harper Adams offers individual counselling and advice on student finances. Students or their parents are welcome to email our Financial Aid Officer, Claire Southgate.

Can EU students expect any support?

Harper Adams takes great care of all students but particularly those who are not from the UK. Each student is allocated a personal tutor and there is welfare and accommodation counselling available. We offer a free introductory course for non-English speaking students. Additional support with English language can be provided, as necessary.

Where is Harper Adams?

We offer a beautiful rural campus in the heart of the English countryside, which is surrounded by its own working farm. However, there are good links to towns and services. We are located in the English midlands north of Birmingham and south of Manchester. The market town of Newport, Shropshire, is a short bus ride away.

Our nearest Airports are: Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.

We offer to collect students from the Airport when they register in September. There is an excellent rail service from Stafford Railway Station and the journey to London takes 1 hour and 50 minutes.
