What the HEC?
Interested in a career in Veterinary Science, Rural Chartered Surveying, Agricultural Business Consultants, Rough Terrain Engineering, Rural Development, Food Retail Buying, Environment Adviser or any professional career/occupation linked to the rural land based industry? Then you'll probably need a university/higher education qualification.
But what's higher education really like?
This event will provide you with the chance to find out.Get some advice on courses for rural, animal and land based careers, take some lectures and seminars, have a bit of a social life - party Harper styley!!, make some new friends, develop some important study skills and discover a whole new world of opportunities. HEC summer taster is a great opportunity to experience university, without having to commit to wanting to go.
You'll be able to experience first hand what university holds in store for you, from subject choices, learning styles through to graduate employment and last but certainly not least have a bit of... FUN!
Who can apply?
This summer taster of higher education is for students who are:
- Currently studying a further education vocational qualification, such as a BTEC National Diploma
- Haven't attended any Aimhigher summer schools previously
- Are 16 or 17 years old
- Parents didn't go to university
If you'd like to come to Higher Education Choices for the Rural Land Based Industries (HEC) Summer Taster but don't meet the qualifying criteria, you can still attend at a cost of £40.00 per person or £60.00 for two. If you are unsure if you qualify, please contact us to check.
What will it cost?
Nothing, Nought, Not a penny!
This event is part government-funded and is one of the activities Harper Adams does to help increase the range of people progressing into higher education. Therefore the cost of this summer taster is completely covered! Including your transport to and from Harper Adams!!
What will I do?
Students will participate in lectures covering subject topics such as Countryside Management, Recreation and the Environment, Agriculture, Food Business Management, Zoology and Agricultural Engineering. The practical seminar activities will include agronomy, practical surveying, equine behaviour, alternative technologies, animal reproduction and woodland management with lots more and you get to choose which you have a go at. There will also be sessions on learning styles and the different skills needed to make the transition from FE to HE studies; how to make university applications and how to apply for student finance. But there is always time to enjoy some of the social activities associated with university lifestyle!

How do I apply?
Application forms can be downloaded from this site or can be sent to you in the post after a request made directly to Harper Adams. If you are unsure if you would be eligible, your college will have an Aimhigher Co-ordinator, usually part of Student Services, who can go through it with you.

Lastly - what's the benefit in attending?
Students attending the Summer Taster will have an insight on what options are open to them after completing their land based vocational qualifications, as well as practical advice on how to complete university applications, what student finance is available and gain some general study skills essential for higher education. Oh yeah, they might also meet people they could be studying with in the future. So it's worth the effort of competing a form. Especially as it's all FREE!!
