The Programme
Summer School courses are delivered in a variety of styles including lectures, workshops, industry visits, laboratory work and field work. You will have access to the computer rooms and our state-of-the-art Learning Resources Centre. Each course offers a graduate employability session that highlights careers within your chosen area and the financial aspects of entering higher education.
Timetables for each course area will be available in due course. In the meantime, based on the courses we ran last year, here is a typical timetable for your day.

1. Introduction to Animal Welfare & Health
Do you enjoy being with animals? Do you want to improve their health & welfare? This course introduces the concepts of "welfare" and "health" of animals and how this is assessed. It is designed to give you an insight into studying the care of farm livestock and companion animals (pets) with a series of hands-on workshops lead by animal professionals and scientists. Ideal for anyone considering a career linked to the animal care industry or who wants to increase their knowledge of animals.
This course will appeal to anyone with an interest in animals, whether as a pet-owner, horse-rider or worker with farm animals.
2. Countryside, Environment and Sustainable Management
If you love the great outdoors, are interested in protecting the environment, conservation or in outdoor recreation then this is the summer school for you. Designed to give you an insight into studying the countryside and its diverse use with a series of hands-on workshops and lectures, led by environmental professionals and scientists. Students will look at wildlife habitat, outdoor leisure pursuits, woodland management and ecology using the specialist facilities on campus such as the woodland and the laboratories.
If you are an active, outdoor addict, natural organiser and people person, concerned about the natural environment and how it is looked after, enjoy planning and juggling a number of different tasks at the same time, then you will find this Summer School useful. Ideal for anyone considering a career linked to the environmental industry or who wants to increase their knowledge of how the British countryside is used and managed.
This course will appeal to those people wishing to go on and study leisure, recreation, environmental science or any topic that is linked to the great outdoors.
3. The Apprentice Dragons - Business for the next generation
Are you a young entrepreneur? Got the product in mind but not sure what the next step is? Well, this Business and Finance course will take you though the stages you need in starting a business, giving you an insight into studying business & finance at university. Entrepreneurs need to demonstrate leadership, motivation and team work while being creative and innovating.
This taster is intended to develop your business knowledge and skills, looking at how to finance your business idea, how the marketing of a product affects its sales and market position as well as the development of a business strategy. You'll consider how you might promote your product through the Internet. At the end of the course you will present your business plan to the other students in the style of the Dragons Den.
This course will appeal to anyone with an interest in business, marketing, finance and sales. Students will gain skills of team work, communication, problem solving and presentations skills.
And on the social side?
Of course, a large part of university life is the social element - making friends and having a good time. Run by current Harper student ambassadors, the social programme will keep you entertained. Last year it included karaoke, bowling, a disco, a formal end-of-week dinner and several sporting opportunities, as on campus we have a range of sporting facilities including squash and tennis courts and a heated outdoor swimming pool.
