Who is this course for?

The course is designed for those who drive normal road-going cars and commercial vehicles with four-wheel drive, higher ground clearance and other added traction aids which will allow the vehicle to be driven on rough terrain.

Serious accidents can and do occur without proper training. The assessment will take place off the public highway on a pre-determined course that will present you with typical obstacles likely to be encountered when driving off road.

Course content

  • Legal and safety requirements relating to using off road vehicles
  • Pre-start checks on the vehicle
  • Actions required following checks
  • Understand need for appropriate PPE
  • Additional considerations when towing a trailer
  • Start and manoeuvre the vehicle over rough terrain including slopes
  • Tow a trailer over rough terrain and reverse around a corner
  • Operate a vehicle mounted winch to remove an obstacle
  • Self-recovery of a ‘bogged’ vehicle

Assessment of pre-start safety and operation of the off-road vehicle is compulsory. Assessment in the use of trailers and winches is optional.

Duration

2 days + 2 hours for assessment. Additional time is required for use of trailer and winch assessments.
