Who is the course designed for?
This course is designed for those who have agricultural knowledge but may not be fully familiar with all that is required and covered by the Single Payment Scheme (SPS), relative to Conservation issues. Conservation Management needs care and attention on farm, to soil, air, water, wildlife, the environment and biodiversity of species. The course is ideally suited to those managing farms, both directly and indirectly as land agents or management consultants. Anyone involved in Estate Management on a broader scale would also benefit from this course. It will also be of interest to those who have qualified for the BASIS Professional Register and want to gain Continuing Professional Development points.

As a result of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the principles of soil organic matter management, the maintenance of good soil structure and soil erosion prevention methods.
- Understanding of the legal and good agricultural practice requirements for the protection of soil and air and the maintenance of soil health and clean air.
- Understand the relationships between soil & water management to enable best use of land and the minimisation of diffuse pollution.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the requirement to, and the reasons for, maintaining biodiversity and the methods of retaining farmland wildlife.
- Ensure understanding of the extent of environmental care on farm, the impact of actions taken and how improvements can be made.
- Gain Continuing Professional Development points.
Course content
The course comprises four modules:
- Soil and Air Protection
- Protection of Surface and Ground Water
- Biodiversity – Conservation and Improvement
- Care of the Environment
Conservation Management is taught by Dr. Alastair Leake and Peter Thompson from the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust.

Qualification
Successful candidates will qualify for Conservation Management Certificate. This course also accrues 12 Continuing Professional Development points for the BASIS Professional Register.
This course contributes to the BASIS Diploma in Agronomy and the newly accredited Harper Adams University College 'Graduate Diploma in Agronomy with Environmental Management'
