Who is the course designed for?
The National Office of Animal Health (NOAH) requires that all animal medicines sales staff and its members be trained, in conjunction with Harper Adams. A training manual and e-manual has been developed to support the study towards the NOAH Certificate of Animal Health. This training course is designed to supplement the learning materials in the manual and is held two to three weeks before the examination. It will be assumed that prior study, from the manual, has taken place.
Benefits
As a result of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the principal husbandry requirements of farm livestock and companion animals.
- Understand basic animal physiology and nutrition and their manipulation.
- Understand the causes and the means of control of disease.
- Be better able to fulfil their role in transmitting knowledge of products, the law and the codes that control and influence their use.
Award structure
The NOAH certificate of animal health award is comprised of a suite of eight modules, with candidates having the opportunity to select which modules they wish to study in addition to the core NCAH: Foundation module. It is hoped that by using this approach, the studies undertaken by candidates can be more focused towards the work they undertake on a day to day basis. Candidates are required to consider the module options and decide which of them they aim to achieve. Each module has been allocated a credit value and all students must achieve a minimum of 30 credits (including NCAH: Foundation module) to be awarded the professional NCAH.
Group A: Compulsory (15 credits at Higher Education level 5)
- NCAH: Foundation Module
Group B: All candidates must select 1 module only to study and be assessed in (each worth 10 credits at Higher Education level 5)
- NCAH: Farm Animal Health Module NCAH
- Equine Management & Health Module NCAH
- Companion Animal Management and Health Module
Group C: All candidates must select 1 module only to study and be assessed in (each worth 5 credits at Higher Education level 5)
- NCAH: Anaesthesiology Module
- NCAH Equine Parasitology Module
- NCAH: Exotic Species and Small Mammal Management and Health Module
- NCAH: The Use of Antimicrobials in Veterinary Medicine
Assessment on all of the modules will be by way of written examinations and a professional 'viva voce' verbal examination.
Course content
Training courses will take place 4 times per year with delivery of modules alternating across these sessions. Training will be run on the basis that group sizes meet or exceed minimum numbers, therefore be demand led. An overview of the frequency of the module deliveries is as follows:
- NCAH: Foundation Module (A) - 3 day course will take place 4 times per year
- NCAH: Farm Animal Health Module (B) - 2 day course will take place 2 times per year
- NCAH: Equine Management & Health Module (B) -2 day course will take place 2 times per year
- NCAH: Companion Animal Management & Health Module (B) - 2 day course will take place 4 times per year
- NCAH: Anaesthesiology Module (C) - 1 day course will take place if there is sufficient interest
- NCAH: Equine Parasitology Module (C) - 1 day course will take place if there is sufficient interest
- NCAH: Exotic Species and Small Mammal Management & Health Module (C) - 1 day course will take place if there is sufficient interest
- NCAH: The Use of Antimicrobials in Veterinary Medicine (C) - 1 day course will take place if there is sufficient interest
The NCAH Foundation Module must be taken either previous to or in conjunction with any group B or C module choices. In addition during any one training period it is not possible to attend training for all A, B and C modules as time does not permit. You will need to attend a following session of training or choose to take the C module by distance learning.
Qualification
You will receive a certificate from NOAH and notification of performance from Harper Adams detailing the higher education academic credits achieved following successful completion of the examinations (these credits are internationally recognised and can be used towards a Higher Education award).
