Who is the course designed for?

The National Office of Animal Health (NOAH) requires that all animal medicines sales staff and its members be trained, in conjunction with (AMTRA). A training manual has been developed leading to the AMTRA Manufacturers’ Examination. This course is designed to support this manual and is held two to three weeks before the examination. It will be assumed that prior study, from the manual, has taken place.

  • Understand the principal husbandry requirements of farm livestock and companion animals.
  • Understand basic animal physiology and nutrition and their manipulation.
  • Understand the causes and the means of control of disease.
  • Be better able to fulfil their role in transmitting knowledge of products, the law and the codes that control and influence their use.

Course content

  • Basic animal physiology and nutrition.
  • Livestock production systems.
  • Care of companion animals.
  • Principle causes and effects of disease, its prevention, treatments and control.
  • Notifiable disease and zoonosis.
  • Medicine categories POM-V, POM-VPS, NFA-VPS and AVM-GSL
  • Legal requirements and responsibilities.

Course structure

Approximately two thirds of the course covers the basic principles of body structure and functioning, the causes of disease and defence systems. The remaining section is composed of the specialist farm animal, companion animal or avian teaching, which the participant chooses from according to his or her own particular area of interest. To register for the examination, candidates must contact AMTRA directly.

Qualification

You will receive an AMTRA Manufacturers’ Certificate and Harper Adams academic credits (can be used as part of a Higher Education course).
