Benefits of the Award

The Awards for All funding (through Lottery Grants for Local Groups) has provided Harper Adams University College (HAUC) benefits in that it has increased the awareness of students, staff and college visitors in the following ways:

  • A large Time Line (9ft x 9ft) on the Biomass Hall building which tells the history of the development of the pre-prototype technology.
  • Information boards outside the major sustainable demonstration technologies which assist staff, students and visitors when using the walking trail or demonstrating college features.
  • A Student Bike Hire Scheme has been set up and launched at the start of the new term in September 2008. The first 6 bikes were advertised on the college campus and in the local and national press. A further 6 bikes purchased by diverting funds from fingerposts, has allowed the scheme to be further extended and for different size bikes to be obtained to suit all heights. In addition, accessories such as helmets, locks and lights have been purchased to ensure students are fully equipped.
  • Three new cycle hoops were purchased and sited in areas around the new Accommodation Halls, Library and other student accommodation areas.
  • Better communication channels, as to set up the Student Bike Hire Scheme collaborative networks are now in place with other Universities, Telford & Wrekin Council and the Student Union.
  • A 12 page Cycle Safety Booklet was developed and produced by the Sustainability team at Harper Adams, to ensure students had a full guide to the Highway Code for cyclists, Sustrans information and the terms and conditions of the college scheme.
  • A 6 page Cycle Trail Booklet sets out nearby trails to encourage students to use their bike to travel to and from college, for shopping and for sight seeing.
  • A Sustainable Walking Trail leaflet highlights the sustainable features on campus and details the background and efficiency to the technologies, for example - green roof, solar panels on self-catering student houses, rainwater harvesting, sustainable building technology, Photovoltaic's, electric vehicles and the Biomass Generator.
  • The student and staff poster competition give a prize for an energy efficiency poster and a renewable energy photograph, and increased awareness of what these issues mean.

In the near future HAUC will be planting a Bio-renewable Garden that will demonstrate plants that can be used to produce energy and industrial products such as bio-composites, textiles, natural dyes and pharmaceuticals. The Bio-renewable Garden will be used as a teaching aid for undergraduate courses and also as a sustainable feature in the updated version of the Sustainable Walking Trail.

The Sustainable Development Team at Harper Adams University College have greatly enjoyed using the monies granted under the Awards for All Lottery Grant, as it has increased better sustainable transport systems and allowed for awareness raising features and events.
