Car Sharing

On December 1st and 3rd 2008, Harper Adams launched two new car sharing schemes to help staff and students reduce pollution and congestion on journeys to and from the University College.

Journeyshare

The staff scheme, journeyshare, was launched on the 1st December and is operated by Telford and Wrekin Council, which enables people to match car journeys across the Borough. By joining the car sharing scheme, staff can reduce the number of single occupancy car journeys, helping to make travel safer, greener and cheaper.

Staff registering for the scheme are asked some simple questions about preferred journey times, days and locations, and can even choose to travel with the same gender, a smoker or non-smoker. These details are then matched to other members of journeyshare from their area or workplace.

The benefits car sharing can provide:

  • dedicated car parking spaces on the main staff car park - available on a first-come-first-served basis
  • reduced travel and servicing costs
  • companionship
  • reduced congestion
  • reduce pressure on car parking spaces
  • reduction in noise and air pollution
  • enjoy a less stressful journey to and from work

Studentshare

The student scheme, studentshare, was launched on 3rd December and is an adaptation of journeyshare with a same aim to get students to car share through informal introduction at a pick-up point located on campus.

Any student wanting a lift can wait at the designated "hitching" point for someone passing and willing to give them a lift stops. The students (if they do not already know each other) exchange ID cards to prove they are students at Harper Adams before reaching any sharing agreement and setting off on their shared journey.

Free Minibus Service

From December 2008 Harper Adams launched a free Saturday minibus service for students. The service starts from the College and goes back and forth to Newport. The purpose of the new service was to make the towns shops and amenities more accessible to those students without cars and those that wish to save money and the environment by leaving their car at College.

To date the service has been utilised fully and the half hourly pick up and drop offs have had to be increased to cater for the number of students using the service. This is great news for the students and the businesses and residents of Newport as it means less traffic going to the town but providing the students with a means to get to the shops and visit fellow students living in Newport, but also providing trade to the towns businesses.
