Dip AVN
Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing

The Course

Nurses who hold the Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing are regarded as being highly qualified by the profession and are therefore highly sought after. The course is designed to be modular and complement your clinical interests by the provision of a number of core and optional modules. A flexible approach means that you can continue working and study when it is suitable for you. You can choose how quickly to progress through the course. The course is part time, and teaching will be by distance delivery. There will be up to one study weekend a month, to include Friday and Saturday, depending on how many modules you choose to study at a time.

It is also possible to combine the Diploma with the BSc (Hons) top-up degree.

Core modules include Evidence-based Nursing, Research Skills for Veterinary Nurses, Applied Essential Physiology, Law Ethics and Professional Practice, Systematic Delivery of Nursing and the Research Project. Three optional modules can be chosen from Small Animal Surgical Nursing, Small Animal Medical Nursing, Anaesthetic Nursing, Diagnostic Imaging and Infection Control. It may be possible to include a module giving the AMTRA SQP qualification.

The Future

Successful completion of the course provides you with an advanced qualification as evidence of your knowledge and nursing ability. You will be entitled to use the post-nominal letters Dip AVN. The veterinary nursing profession is advancing and there will soon be an increased requirement for highly trained, competent nurses in practice. The Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing is an industry recognised qualification and enhances employment opportunities, particularly in the referral field.

Entry Requirements

You must have a veterinary nursing qualification that entitles the holder to register with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as an RVN, plus a minimum of a year in veterinary practice after obtaining this qualification. Entry will also be determined by an informal interview and short assessment.
