The Course

UK consumers spend more than £125 billion on food and drink annually and about 15 per cent of all jobs in the UK come from the Agri-food supply chain. It is a vigorous and dynamic industry, both nationally and internationally, with new technology and products satisfying ever-increasing consumer demands.

These courses have a core of marketing, business management, agriculture and food disciplines. They develop well-qualified managers with proven business, marketing, communication, technical and IT skills, who are sought after in the Agri-food sector.

Students can specialise in a range of business management modules, applied to the agricultural and food sectors. These include Principles of Marketing, International Marketing, Farm Assurance and Quality, Market Research, Strategic Management
and People Management. Optional modules include Integrated Marketing Communication, Consumer Behaviour and languages. The degree has Chartered Institute of Marketing Certificate and Diploma exemptions. The FdSc has Chartered Institute of Marketing Certificate exemption.

The Placement

The one-year placement will help you put theory into practice in a commercial environment. Recent placement employers have included Banks Cargill Agriculture, TESCO, Promar International, Royal Agricultural Society, and Tyrells. Students have undertaken roles as diverse as promotions coordination, financial management and planning, product range management, market research, and copy writing.

The Future

The track record of graduates in gaining business management positions in the Agri-food sector is second to none. Potential careers span the whole food supply chain, from agricultural merchants and pharmaceutical companies to food manufacturers, distributors, retailers and traders. The commercial and management skills you develop enable you to work in government, trade and overseas development organisations, banks, or specialist market research agencies and consultancies. Or you could set up your own food, farm, or rural-based enterprise.
