The Course
Over the last few years there has been a considerable change in the rural economy with increasing emphasis being placed on conservation, biodiversity and the aesthetic appeal of the countryside. There is an increasing demand for highly skilled people who can reconcile the conflict arising between commercial food production and environmental considerations.
This course brings together Harper Adams’ expertise in both agriculture and environmental management and will provide you with a thorough understanding of the science and technology associated with agricultural production systems. It also evaluates how agricultural activities impact on the environment and identifies ways in which this can be minimised.
After the core period of agricultural study you will go on to study a wide range of agricultural and environmental modules, which include Crop Protection and Technology, Environmental Quality & Protection, Integrated Countryside Management and Conservation of Resources. Optional modules include Countryside Recreation and Management, and Alternative Crops.
The Placement
Students usually carry out a period of paid employment within an appropriate farm business or the agricultural support industries. This one-year period allows you to put your earlier studies into practice and to observe and participate in current practices, which you may use as case studies later in the course. You will develop the skills, contacts, confidence and knowledge attractive to employers, as our excellent graduate employment record shows.
The Future
Exciting and dynamic careers abound in environmental management and consultancy. Successful graduates of this course can look forward to wide ranging opportunities. You could follow a career in production agriculture or with one of the environmental agencies associated with rural environmental protection, for example.
