The Course
This course is aimed at school leavers looking for a career in the food industry, and a means of gaining a HE qualification for those already working in it. It provides a theoretical understanding of food and the food marketplace and, importantly, a hands-on understanding of food processing technologies.
The course is a full time sandwich course over three years, with a 12-month placement in year two.
Core (compulsory) modules include: The Nature of Food; Food Society and Industry; Global Food Production and Quality; Food Product Management; Hygiene and Food Safety; Farm Assurance and Quality; Animal Product Processing, and Commodity Crop and Fresh Produce Processing. Optional modules include: Horticultural Production
Systems, Food Marketing, and Fresh Produce Production. Completing the course to the required standard will allow you to top up to an honours degree, through studying the final year of a food industry related honours degree course at Harper Adams.
The Placement
The salaried placement year is a requirement for full-time students. Those who are already working in the food industry can be exempted on the basis of work experience already gained. The placement year provides first-hand experience of the industry and allows the development of the personal skills and characteristics needed to work with others. Employment may be in any part of the food industry, from food processing and manufacturing through to retailing and buying.
The Future
You will graduate with a vocational qualification that will enable you to target many different, well-paid career options in the food industry. Some graduates may wish to develop their careers in food processing and manufacture, others may be more interested in the commercial areas of the food industry. Alternatively, you may wish to work in marketing or buying, or, for example, category management in supermarket businesses.
