The Course

This course is a result of increasing interest in human nutrition amongst the food industry and the growing need for graduates with an understanding of food production /manufacturing as well as its relation to human nutrition.

The degree will help you understand the relationship between food, nutrition and health. It will give you the skills to work in the design and manufacture of food products aimed at modern consumers, who have an increasing interest in food and its impact on health. You will develop a keen interest in food and human nutrition and be able to deliver healthy eating messages appropriately to consumers. This course will produce graduates who understand how to produce safe and nutritious food as well as the legislation and policies governing the production/manufacture of food.

You will study modules such as Well-being Through the Lifecycle, Principles of Marketing, Food Psychology, Public Health Nutrition, Food Product Development and Sensory Evaluation, Consumer Behaviour and Advanced Aspects of Nutrition.

The Placement

A year is spent in paid employment within the food industry – where you choose to spend it depends on your interests and career goals. The placement period gives students the opportunity to develop their professional and personal skills, make contacts in the industry, and use what they have learned in the workplace to enhance their final year studies.

The Future

The multi-million pound food industry is the largest sector in the UK manufacturing industry, employing over half a million people in more than 100,000 locations. The food industry contains many multinational companies and therefore offers opportunities for travel or work abroad.

Therefore, a career in the food industry offers better opportunities for employment than practically any other industry and with competitive salaries too. Graduates of this course can expect to find employment in areas such as product development, food marketing, buying and food journalism. In particular, graduates of this course will be provided with an appreciation of the various disciplines they will require within a multidisciplinary workplace.
