External Scholarships

The Three Counties Agricultural Society Bursary in memory of Joe Henson MBE

Applications are invited from individuals for an annual bursary not exceeding £1,000 per annum towards the cost of fees incurred whilst studying.

The following conditions apply:

Eligibility of Applicants

  1. To be a resident within the three counties of Gloucestershire, Herefordshire or Worcestershire for a minimum of 12 months prior to application. Applicants don’t necessarily have to be studying within the three counties.
  2. Aged 18 to 23 years at the onset of the Bursary.
  3. Commencing a course of study where agriculture, horticulture, arboriculture, apiculture, forestry, rural crafts and skills and conservation, or related subjects form a major part of their course.
  4. The course must be full time and of Further, Higher, or Post Graduate education level.
  5. Be accepted to take up a place of study at an educational institution.
  6. Applications will be assessed on merit. No means test will be involved.

Financial Limits of the Bursary

  1. Bursaries are limited to £1,000 per year of study for a maximum of three years if the duration of the course is three years or more and the student makes satisfactory progress. Grants will be made for up to three years, funds being released one year at a time, but students will be required to attend interviews by The Three Counties Bursary Board before being granted a bursary for continuing years of study.


  1. The assessment will be carried out by a panel from the Three Counties Bursary Board, whose decision shall be final.
  2. Applicants will be required to attend an interview and may be accompanies by a parent or guardian. References from existing or former places of education or employment will be an advantage and must be provided before the interview.

Key Dates

  1. Applications must be received by 01 July 2017
  2. Interviews will be held in July and August
  3. Following the publication of your results for entry to College or University, applicants must forward their confirmed place details and their intent to commence studies in that year, by the last working day of August.
  4. Bursary awardees will be required to send a video clip to Three Counties by the end of October to be played at the Three Counties Farming Conference.


  1. Successful applicants will be required to give an annual report of their course in writing to the Board of Trustees. The Three Counties Agricultural Society will have the right to publish this report.
