A record number of 297,000 people attended the 88th National Ploughing Championships held in County Carlow, Ireland over three days from Tuesday 17 to Thursday 19 September.
New to the event this year was the agri-tech pavilion which showcased interactive demonstrations from Harper Adams University including "Norman the farming robot", an autonomous precision scouting and spraying robot. These demonstrations took place throughout each of the three days. There were also demonstrations on platooning, laser weeding and vision systems.
The ROSbot 2.0, a tool used for research and development in the Engineering Department at Harper Adams, was also demonstrated. This robot has a 360 degree LIDAR detector which emits small beams of light to detect distance as well as a distance sensing colour camera. The onboard inertial measurement unit (IMU) allows the acceleration and angle of travel to be measured. Its four wheels are able to move independently. The robot can communicate with devices such as laptops and desktops to share data. Small robots like this have huge roles in agricultural engineering research.
We were also pleased to welcome NPAIE President James Sutton and Managing Director Anna-May McHugh to the Harper Adams University stand just a day before Anna travelled to the UK to receive her honorary doctorate at our graduation ceremony.
The 89th National Ploughing Championships will take place on 15 to 17 September 2020.
