I am a postgraduate researcher in the Crop and Environment Sciences Department at Harper Adams. My PhD project looks at the ecology of springtails (Collembola) in agroecosystems, I explore the responses of this group of six legged soil-dwelling arthropods to different agricultural techniques. I have worked with Simon Leather, Ivan Grove, Paula Misiewicz and Simon Jeffery within the department and I am currently writing my PhD thesis for submission in Autumn 2017.
My wider interests are invertebrate ecology, taxonomy and specimen curation, agroecology, soil biodiversity, biological recording and natural history. Prior to my PhD I studied UCert in Biological Recording & Identification at the University of Birmingham, then BSc Ecology & Environmental Biology and MRes Entomology at Imperial College London.
I am module tutor on Harper Adams MSc Entomology modules: C7009 Biology & Taxonomy of Insects, C7011 Diversity & Evolution of Insects and C7041 Experimental Design & Analysis. I assist with teaching in entomology laboratory practicals and statistical computing exercises and I lecture on insect specimen preservation and soil biodiversity. I also teach entomology on the British Ecological Society's annual Undergraduate Summer School and the BBSRC-funded CROPPS Summer School.
I submitted my application for Associate Fellowship of the Higher Eduation Academy in Summer 2017.
I am a STEM ambassador and regularly take part in outreach activities at Harper Adams including the Children's University, the Harper Adams Experience, Explore University and Higher Horizons+. I have also supervised CREST project students from schools in Newport, Shropshire. In 2016 I helped organise the first ever entomology conference for schools and colleges, EntoSci16, on the Harper Adams campus and I am currently helping to organise EntoSci18.
I have organised entomological outreach events since 2012, including a BioBlitz at Imperial College's Silwood Park campus and the annual Minibeast Adventure at the Dorothy Clive Garden, as part of the Royal Entomological Society's National Insect Week. I am also involved in outreach behind the scenes at the Society coordinating social media, writing website content and organising stands at science fairs such as The Big Bang.
