Stephen is a Harper alumnus (REALM 1992-1996) who has kept up his links with Harper since graduating. Having carried out his placement year with the Buccleuch Group and a post-graduation post with Knight Frank he was re-employed by Buccleuch initially as Assistant Factor for the Langholm Estate in 1997 before becoming Factor (Agent) in 2001. In 2003 he took over the post of Rural Property Business Manager across all of the Group’s estates and also moved to be the Estate Manager at Bowhill. In 2005 Stephen became the Head of Rural Property, overseeing the Building and Visitor Services operations in addition to the Rural Property portfolio, and in March 2009 Stephen began working directly to the Chief Executive and Buccleuch Family as Group Strategy Director.
In the summer of 2013 Stephen joined Buckminster on the Leicestershire/Lincolnshire border as Managing Director and delivered a number of significant opportunities for the business including consents for large-scale new residential, commercial and retail developments at Grantham. Early in 2019 Stephen then moved to take on the role of Chief Executive for The Duke of Devonshire’s group of businesses which include Chatsworth in Derbyshire, Bolton Abbey in Yorkshire, Compton in Eastbourne and Lismore Castle in Ireland.
