My Father’s family farmed in County Armagh and I grew up on a small farm in Somerset. I won an Exhibition to Merton College Oxford, where I studied Biochemistry. Being interested in agriculture I went on to take a MSc with Distinction at Reading in farm animal nutrition.
My first job was with the Unilever animal feed firm BOCM Silcock. I worked with Professor Peter Wilson (who went on to head the East of Scotland College of Agriculture) developing improved animal feeds using the Unilever Research facilities at Bedford and the company Development farm just outside Whitchurch.
The lure of Shropshire however worked its magic. I married a Shropshire lass and moved to Condover where she runs an equestrian centre. I retrained as a Chartered Accountant qualifying in the Order of Merit in 1987 and have built up a specialist team at Whittingham Riddell. which deals with the particular financial and tax issues faced by large agricultural businesses and rural estates.
We have three daughters, all presently at university. One sadly escaped to the Agriculture department at Reading!
