Samuel Wellicome, 19, from Market Harborough, has been awarded a British Poultry Scholarship sponsored by PD Hook.
Samuel, a first year FdsC Agri-business student will receive £4,500 in the current academic year as well as a paid work placement year with the hatchery company.
Samuel said: “This placement offer within PD Hook allows me to work in many different aspects of the business and its sister companies and broiler farms. I will spend my placement in hatcheries, broiler farms, breeding programmes and so on. I am looking forward to my placement with PD Hook and hope to gain knowledge and experience in the poultry sector to aid my future career.
“I applied for the PD Hook scholarship as I see it as a great way in to the ever growing poultry industry in the UK, it will also allow me to gain 'on the job' experience, develop skills and increase my knowledge within the sector and to aid my future career.
“I believe PD Hook is an ideal company to expand this knowledge and experience due to its large reach in terms of the whole process of poultry production from farm to fork with its sister company 2sisters.
“Also the fact that the business is family run and along with my interactions with Patrick Hook and employees being extremely positive and encouraging.
“I am extremely grateful to PD Hook for awarding me this scholarship and I am looking forward to working within the company - I hope to impress during my placement. I was extremely proud to hear that I had been accepted as scholar for PD Hook and I am excited to learn more about the company and how it runs day to day.
“Later in my studies I hope to top-up to an honours degree. I am sure that my placement at PD Hook will help me decide what I want to do once I graduate from Harper Adams university.
