Chemical control of larvae is difficult due to the withdrawal of the most persistent products for use in growing media and to current restrictions on using the remaining products on flowering plants and/or in peat-free substrates. Growers need more information on effective chemical control of adults. Available biological methods for vine weevil control within Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programmes include entomopathogenic nematodes and a fungus (Met52). However, growers lack confidence in Met52 and current nematode application methods are labour-intensive.
This project will address key knowledge gaps to improve control methods on HNS.
New information will be provided on:
Temperature thresholds for adult activity and egg-laying and practical monitoring methods to help time controls
Novel lure-and-kill strategy for adults using attractant and entomopathogenic nematodes
Novel application method for more cost-effective control of larvae with nematodes
Best-practice use of IPM-compatible insecticides and novel biopesticide for adult control
Best-practice use of Met52 and novel biopesticide for control of larvae
The results will be communicated promptly to the industry and will also be relevant to control of other ground-dwelling pests and to control of vine weevil in soft fruit and protected ornamentals.
