Accessing British Library documents

Interlending articles and book chapters may be delivered electronically using the British Library's secure electronic delivery service.

Place your request as normal and if it's available from the British Library, it will be sent to you as an encrypted PDF using a service called DRM Lite.

The document that you receive is linked to a person rather than a device - it can be viewed on any machine, including mobile devices.

Registering for a British Library account

Go to British Library On Demand

Click Register in the top right corner, and follow the instructions for registering an account.

You'll need to provide information such as your address and phone number. If you don't want to give your address, you may use the University's address instead.

You will need your account username and password to log in and access your documents, so keep the details safe.

You will receive an automated confirmation email from the British Library, click on the link within the email to activate your account.

Please note: There is a 15 minute delay between registration and your account becoming active, so if you can't access your document the first time, try again a bit later.

How do I open a document?

Once requested, a link to the document will be sent to your email address

If you have already registered for the service the system should recognise your email address when you click on the link, if it does not you will be prompted to enter your email address

If you have not registered for the service the system will ask you to register before you can download the document.

Can I print an item?

You are permitted to make a single printed copy of the document but may not make any further copies.

Can I share a document with anyone else?

No, only the user who downloaded the document is allowed access to it.

I am unable to see or download the document

You must have internet access to download and open a document.

Documents must be opened in Adobe Reader, if you don't already have it you can download it here.

If your browser has an in-built PDF viewer, e.g. Google Chrome, it will need to be disabled. For Chrome type into address bar chrome://plugins and click on disable in the Chrome PDF viewer.

If you are downloading your document using an iPad, use Apple's default Safari browser.

Still not able to see the document? Your download may have expired, you have 30 days from the date

How long can I access the document for?

The download link will remain valid for 30 days, after this you will need to reorder the item.

Once you have downloaded the document you will need to save it to your local machine by selecting File > Save As in Adobe Reader. You may access the saved document for 3 years.

Adobe Acrobat Reader

Documents will be sent to you as encrypted PDFs which can only be opened with Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you don't have it already you can download it here.
