Training and Inductions

Group sessions

New students are given an induction to show them how to use the Library. What is involved depends on the type of course you are taking, but typically involves activities or a  tour of the physical library for those on campus regularly or a session on the electronic resources for distance learners.

Sessions to help with finding information successfully are also given to new Postgraduates and both first and second year Undergraduates. Fourth years are offered further training to help with their dissertations.

Other group sessions are offered during the year as they are needed.

Individual help

Sometimes it is easier to get help on a one-to-one basis and this is on offer to you whenever the Enquiry Desk is open.  Just come and ask the Librarian for help with finding information, referencing or any other question related to the Library or information.  You can also book an appointment if you prefer. We are very happy to help you, just come and ask or email or telephone us.

Online training

We offer online training so that you can learn at your own speed. Topics include:

  • Sources of Information – When to use journals or books or other sources of information
  • Search Techniques – Tips on carrying out a good search for information
  • Evaluating Information – Is the information you have found suitable to use in your work?

You will find these in the Study Skills section of the website

We also have a range of shorter guides and materials which you will find in the Finding Information section and on the How do I...? page
