The Course
This degree is only for currently qualified veterinary nurses who wish to 'top-up' their vocational qualification to an honours degree. As many potential applicants will be working full or part-time, this degree will be delivered by blended learning – a combination of short (one or two day) periods of attendance at Harper Adams and distance learning.
Although it is the equivalent of two full-time academic years, it is anticipated that most students will study on a part-time basis and extend the period of study up to four years.
In the early part of the course some modules are core; these are both essential study areas and modules appropriate to higher level education. Optional modules are available in both year levels to allow you to explore special interest areas and give you the opportunity to gain extra skills. It is intended that the first 120 credits plus an integrated assignment can lead to the RCVS Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Dip AVN).
Work placement
No formal placement time is required for the honours degree, but some time in appropriate practice will be needed to qualify for the Dip AVN.
Careers
The opportunities available to qualified veterinary nurses are increasing as the profession develops. Nurses with degrees can continue to work as veterinary nurses, work in practice management, go into teaching or work in the pharmaceutical industry. There are also opportunities now for degree holding veterinary nurses to study for MSc degrees in Physiotherapy and Pharmacy, widening the scope of their role.
Entry requirements
You must have a veterinary nursing qualification that entitles the holder to register with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as an RVN, plus a minimum of a year in veterinary practice after obtaining this qualification. There will be a small entrance assessment test and interview.
