Amy Carter, 23, from Sheffield, is a second year BSc Veterinary Nursing student and recipient of the EFD scholarship.
“I have rescued and rehomed 100+ animals, many of which were throughout my teenage years. I think that’s where my passion for animals began and my interest in Veterinary Nursing started.
“I was always determined to work with animals but was unsure as to which part of the industry to go into. Due to this, I took an Applied Science course in college and then spent a few years working whilst looking at various Universities and degrees. I decided that Veterinary Nursing was the route I wanted to take and after a 2-3 year break, I applied to Harper Adams.
“Being able to gain further qualifications whilst at University can help further my career once graduated and increase my employability. Veterinary Nursing is a highly competitive career so increasing employability is highly beneficial.
“I applied for the EFD Scholarship to aid my time at University. Veterinary Nursing can incur a variety of costs, some of which are necessary and others which will help further my career such as gaining extra qualifications. University life can be stressful and not having the added stress of financial worry is highly beneficial and gives peace of mind that I can afford any course related costs.
“In addition, the Scholarship will aid my travel to and from University as well as my time during placement. Since moving off campus into the local town of Newport, travel to lectures has become increasingly difficult. Along with my placement year fast approaching, I was unsure of how difficult this would be as I do not yet drive. The scholarship will help fund my driving lessons which allows me to use my time more efficiently as opposed to trying to arrange travel day by day.
“During my time at Harper, I have been heavily involved with the University. I am involved with the on-campus farm, volunteering 3-4 days a week. Alongside my studies, I also became a member of Harper Outdoor Pursuits Society, which since progressing into my second year of Harper I am now Vice President. I’ve also taken on an ambassador role which involves speaking to prospective students and giving campus tours along with completing residentials at Harper and other Universities.”
