Velcourt Arable scholar: Fred Sorby

Fred Sorby, second year BSc (Hons) Agriculture with Crop Production student and recipient of the Velcourt Arable Scholarship.

“I come from a non-farming background. After my A-levels I wasn’t sure what to do and started work on a local farm. My passion for agriculture grew during this time and released I wanted to pursue a career in the industry, specifically farm management,” says Fred, 21.

“Having the possibility to gain entry to the trainee management scheme is a massive opportunity. I am sure I will learn a great deal in my placement year and am keen to get going. After working for Velcourt over the summer in 2018, I learnt a lot about the company and loved every aspect. I knew the scholarship was something I wanted to try for.”

Before his burgeoning interest in agriculture, Fred, from Blandford Forum in North Dorset, has enjoyed some varied experiences. “During my gap year, before spending six months working on a local farm, I managed a chalet in the alps for four months.”

Away from the course, he lives a very active life. “When I’m not studying, I’m usually working which is what I really enjoy. Otherwise I like to spend my down time outside, doing things like walking my dogs, shooting and beating or playing sports like tennis and golf. Apart from minor achievements at school both in sports and academia, it’s fair to say securing this scholarship is my greatest achievement to date.”
