Dominique Wilcox, final year FdSc Agri-Business student and recipient of the Newport and District Agricultural Society scholarship.
“For many years my family have been keen supporter of Newport Show, I can also safely say I attended well before I could walk.”
Now, local girl Dominique, from Shebdon, will be playing an active part in the annual event as part of her scholarship award. “When the scholarship opportunity was sent to me, I automatically got excited due to being able to get involved with the behind-the-scene- action of a large agricultural show, let alone one which I hold very close to my heart – for this reason I jumped at the opportunity.”
After a year on placement in events and marketing, the award provides a unique opportunity to bring her skills to practical use. “I spent many weekends on a trade stand at different events all around the country. I always wondered whilst attending shows at Olympia London, agricultural shows in Yorkshire, and other smaller events on the Devon coast, how these events run and the amount of team effort it must take to organise a large show.
“I can only thank the society for choosing me to represent them and join the team during this exciting year – I cannot wait to experience Newport show in a completely different way and feel accomplished at the end of the day”, says Dominique, 20.
She is hoping to bring her range of experiences to good use alongside personal interests. “I am an extremely keen dressage rider, having previously competed with a range of horses at different levels. This passion has pushed me into completing British Horse Society examinations as well as helping run my parents busy livery yard near Newport Shropshire. This is something I hope to expand and help promote after completing my degree.”
