A sponsored bike ride has been scheduled for the 2nd to 5th June in aid of the George Crawford Legacy Trust – in memory of the Harper Adams University student who sadly died last October, shortly after commencing his studies.
Four teams of three riders are set to cycle from Melrose in the Scottish borders, George’s home town, to Harper Adams in Shropshire, in a trip totalling around 250 miles – with sponsors for support vehicles, riders, kit and equipment being sought.
The trust has a goal of raising around £100,000 to contribute to Riding for the Disabled, and to also help young people who are involved in rural and equestrian industries as they kick-start their careers. Grants to help allow aspiring equestrians fund travel to gain experience, or providing help for those who have had an accident or suffered injury - with possible help from the Jack Berry House are examples of how the Trust plans to make a difference.
George’s family said: “There is not an hour that goes past when we do not think of him and our minds have turned to how we can honour his memory and ensure that his incredible energy, his warmth and his infinite capacity for kindness are translated into something positive.”
Funds raised at George’s funeral have already enabled the purchase of Alfie, a 14hh bay gelding, for the Borders Branch of Riding for the Disabled – along with some funding for the winter keep to help Alfie settle and become a hard-working member of the RDA team at Monteviot. In addition, a £2900 contribution was made to support the work of the Jack Berry House by the Injured Jockeys Fund.
The Trust has already received waves of support, such as charity work from Young Farmers and being represented at the Floors International Horse Trials, where George once competed. The talented equestrian was a team member of the Scottish Squad in the National Under-18 Championships in 2016.
