What makes a Harper Adams business management with marketing degree different?
By taking a business management with marketing degree, you will be given every opportunity to work within a real world context. Theories are applied to experience; lecturers and forums are hosted by trained professionals, and we invite students to undertake placements at every opportunity to test out their learning in a business environment.
Jane Headley, the course manager, spoke about the unique qualities of the degree course. She said: “Our modules are varied around creativity and enterprise, encouraging students to think in different ways. The twelve month placement is also really important so that students can see a whole cycle in a company’s year - when they’re busy; when they’re quiet; what problems the face; and what resolutions they discover. This way they understand the theories they learn in a real world context.”
Students also find the course extremely beneficial in broadening their horizons and encouraging the development of their own business ideas. Olivia Vallance, a second year student, commented: "There is a varied focus in agriculture, food and business, linking these ideas together in cases studies and practical activities." Taking this forward, students are encouraged to develop their enterprise skills in extracurricular activities such as market stalls and start up businesses.
Rebecca Payne, Head of Agri-business Management, talks about how students can prepare for such a course, saying: “They should be prepared to give everything a go. We like to get everyone on board quickly to take on the challenge of university life inside and outside of the classroom. We will get students to negotiate, practise selling, pitching and working accounts in a risk free environment so they can make their mistakes and learn from them. When they go out to work, we want them to be prepared.”
Business studies will always be a pathway into an interesting and varied working world. However, business management at Harper Adams will highlight the deeply embedded understanding of how business interconnects with the wider world through practical experience. A Harper Adams business management with marketing degree is rich with these real world examples and that’s what makes this degree matter.
