As part of the initiative to incorporate extra-curricular activities to enhance the overall degree programmes, the Harper Business Plus group were joined in November by The Negotiation Club to build and develop vital business skills with students.
In attendance were students from Business, REALM, and Food degree routes. They were invited to attend a taster event in which The Negotiation Club used their Negotiation Cards to place students into the space of buyer and seller. The cards challenged students to occupy these roles and use discussion skills to sell and be persuaded into purchase. Developing confidence in negotiation expertise in a relaxed environment will help students going into their placement year when such skills will be put to the test.
The students themselves had an incredibly positive experience, offering feedback such as, “It was a great course that allowed me to gain confidence in negotiating and use the skills learnt in my future career.”
Another individual hailed the events impact on their own learning and said “The Negotiation Club was an engaging and thought-provoking experience that taught valuable, practical skills that are relevant to the real-world. The Club represents an opportunity to develop these skills in ways not always possible as part of a standard degree course.”
Following the event, the cards will be in use in the second-year Sales and Customer Service module, accessed by business and engineering students. Harper Adams is the first UK university to embed the card system in its teaching, seeing the beneficial results from the event as a clear indicator for its success.
