The Vet Society arrives at Harper Adams

A new Students' Union society has been launched, bringing together 74 members from across the university to share in a love of animals. The Vet Society seeks to bring together like-minded students on animal science courses but equally welcomes enthusiasts of any background. Running events on and off-campus, students will have the opportunity to venture out into zoos, attend events and use their degree knowledge more recreationally.

Treasurer Imogene Munns, second-year BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing student, from Hertfordshire, spoke about the need for a society such as this, saying, “A lot of the existing clubs are focused on sport or hobbies. We’re the only ones who focus on animal health and welfare.

“We’re just trying to bring everyone together from different backgrounds to have fun by arranging trips to Crufts and Chester Zoo. We’re also setting up talks from a variety of speakers, raising money for animal charities and are volunteering with the local Dogs Trust.”

The society have secured a sponsorship from Vetpartners, a company that invests and develops veterinary practices. This sponsorship has helped to fund society events and other activities.

The Society has formed at a time where the presence of veterinary students is set to grow, with the new Harper and Keele Veterinary School opening in September 2020.

Imogene said: “Everyone has been saying it’s a great opportunity with two universities joining and being the future of veterinary industry. Keele-based students will be able to use our society so we’re going to be the link between the two campuses on the same course. We want to help bring them together so they feel united as a family through their common interest in animals.”

Society Vice-Chairman and fellow veterinary nursing student, Emily Leonard, 19, from Derby, added: "We want to link vet nurses and vets because in the industry there's quite a divide sometimes. and collaboration can only help to improve animal care."
