Big Energy Saving Week has been launched today by Citizens Advice. As an annual event, the week aims to shed light on how to help people cut their energy bills and get the financial support they are entitled to. In doing so, not only can you save money, but you can contribute to a cleaner environment by not wasting energy.
As part of #SustainableHarper, over the course of the week, we will be looking at energy saving on campus; why it is important for the environment; and tips to help you save on energy while at university. As the national charity highlights, their energy advice web pages have been viewed 1.4 million times - we want to be part of an open discussion that will help those struggling to come forward and be able to find ways of saving energy in a cost effective and sustainable way.
From the Citizens Advice, there are three key steps that you should consider this Big Energy Saving Week. Firstly, check your usage, and see if you are paying too much. Check to see if there are any benefits, grants and support you're equally entitled to that could help to reduce the cost of energy. Second, switch over to a cheaper supplier, by comparing energy suppliers. Ultimately that means you can save by being aware of your use. Leaving appliances on standby, not switching off lights, and continuing to use outdated products can all increase energy consumption so don't forget to upgrade and switch off those pieces of tech around the house.
Whether you are living in halls, in student housing or in your own property nearby, there are plenty of potential ways to be more aware of energy consumption and uphold more sustainable practices. For information and support, you can speak to Student Services about ways to save money and be more sustainable.
