Why should you come to our open day? Cathy Daniells tells all...

    12 March 2020

Are you considering coming to our undergraduate open day on March 21? Our students say that attending the open day is one of the best things they did before choosing which path they would take into higher education. Cathy Daniells is one such student, who shared her journey in attending Harper Adams, through the open day experience.

Cathy had studied agriculture at college in her home county of Wiltshire. She commented: "I'm not from a farming background although I have connections through family to others who have farms. I've always been the outdoorsy type and love animals so I knew I would want to make this part of my future career."

Cathy spent some time looking into higher education options but it was through the Harper open day that she made her decision. She said: "The open day was a great experience; there's a real community feeling about Harper that you only get when you visit.

"You get to meet the people that will nuture and support your learning and have a conversation about what the degree course actually involves. You can see the farm and the great facilities that are available right on your doorstep. It also solidified the reputation of the institution for me - I'd heard so many good things about Harper but it was only in seeing them for myself that I realised just how amazing they are."

Now in her second year studying BSc (Hons) Agriculture and Animal Science, Cathy is making good use of everything she saw on her open day. She explained: "I'm currently working on research around animal health, bio-technology, genetics and nutrition. I get to work in our labs as well as down on the farm, being involved with both the care and study of pigs. Having academic experts that are teaching us the latest knowledge is amazing for preparing us for the working world."

Cathy has already had some experience of the animal industry through JSR Genetics, a UK specalist in pig farming and genetics. She shared her experience, saying: "Working for JSR was a great experience as I learnt a lot through plenty of varied tasks. I was really fortunate to be awarded a scholarship that gave me the opportunity to have a taste of the industry I would love to work for.

"I would advise others to apply for a scholarship too. It's helped me get so much experience that has been relevant in the classroom. It's definitely changed my understanding and made my degree all the more valuable."
