Technology shaping the future of agriculture: Meet Ollie Dudgeon

Ollie Dudgeon is in his third year studying FdSc Agriculture with Mechanisation, learning about the connections between engineering and the agricultural sector. Thoroughly enjoying his studies so far, Ollie spoke about how the degree pathway has enabled him to work and learn about the interconnected nature of his discipline.

“I chose to come to Harper for this course specifically,” Ollie began. “Along with the amazing facilities on offer and the high quality of teaching that I had heard about from previous students of the university.

“My course is a mixture of general agriculture and more focused on mechanisation and how technology will shape the future of agriculture.

“So far, my degree has been excellent. I have especially enjoyed the practical aspect of being able to learn on the farm and within the engineering facilities like working in the soil hall, which has proved to be an invaluable resource.”

As part of his course, Ollie undertook a placement year, developing vital industry skills. He said: “I have worked on a vegetable farm in Yorkshire for my placement. This was a great experience and allowed me to gain a deep understanding of how the UK vegetable farmers work, as well as supply chains with supermarkets.”

Planning for the future, Ollie commented: “I am hoping to top up to the BSc degree next year and go into the hydroponic industry following that.” 

For others looking to follow a similar path, Ollie said: “I would advise any new student to try everything available at the university and not to miss opportunities that are available, as this will really enhance their experience here.”
