Net-Zero Carbon Emission aim for Henry and his flock of 64,000 free-range chickens.

Harper Adams Agriculture with Crop Management Bsc (Hons) graduate Henry Mason has told Farming UK why he has added a flock of 64,000 free-range egg producing hens to his families predominantly arable farm in the Yorkshire Molds.

Henry explains that after graduating from Harper Adams, he and his brother decided that they wanted to expand and futureproof the family business, in ways which were sustainable and would fit in with what was already established on the farm.

In 2019 Henry and his brother built their first 32,000 capacity bird house and have added another in 2020 and now supply free-range eggs to supermarket chain - Morrisons.

Henry also signed up to Morrison’s ‘Chuckle Egg Scheme’ which rewards producers for the environmental work they do on their farms, as a result of which, Henry has planted 20% of his range with saplings and has designated areas for bee-friendly flowers.

Looking to the future, Henry admits his next step is reducing the farm’s carbon footprint and hopes to be able to produce eggs with net- zero carbon emissions by 2030.
