By the Harper Adams University Rowing Club
Rowing is a sport recognised by countless universities across the United Kingdom and which is supported by many, therefore at Harper Adams we did not want to miss the exceptional opportunities that Rowing provides.
The Rowing Club at Harper Adams University is such an inspiring experience which you should be seriously considering when starting Harper. The Club is not only for those which are experienced rowers but also those who have never tried the sport before but are willing and eager to learn!
Getting involved in a Club/ Society at Harper really makes you feel part of the Harper Adams Community and allows you to meet with others who are in different year groups and are studying different courses to you.
The Rowing Club has two water sessions a week and a land training session and we additionally meet socially once a week and this enables you to communicate to others in the club which you may have not trained with in that particular week.
Training on the water helps with team building and technique, we train in boats of: 8’s,4’s, Doubles, or Singles and this includes sweeping and sculling crews. Adrenaline really kicks in when competing at rowing events such as British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) and will make you even more enthusiastic about the sport.
The early morning starts are refreshing and allows you to fit in two hours of exercise before you have even started lectures!
All that is needed for the Rowing Club is willingness to learn, commitment and effort. The Rowing Club also offers opportunities for those who don’t want to take part in the actual rowing however still want to be part of the club and part of the competitions, coxing is perfect for this!
Being a Cox is a really important role in the boat as if provides the team with someone to steer the boat and help to motivate whilst training and competitions. Rowing certainly is a team sport so it is significant that everyone taking part puts equal effort in training to become the best possible crews that we can be.
We have recently been to the BUCS 3-day event at Nottingham Holme Pierrepont National Water Sports Centre. This was a successful competition as a Women’s Beginner 8+, Women’s Intermediate 2x, Men’s Intermediate 4x, Men’s Intermediate 2x and Men’s Intermediate 1x all qualified to a final of their divisions.
We were all proud of our progress because of our hard work, fitness plan and rowing training camp which we completed over the Easter holidays.
Also, whilst at BUCS we came 2nd in the Funky Legging Competition which many rowing clubs also entered, our had red tractors on them to show that we are from an Agricultural University and that Massey Ferguson have kindly sponsored us this year.
We are all proud of the club’s success this year and hope that we continue to be successful in the years to come.
