Farmers Weekly have spoken to their current Ag Student of the Year award winner, Ben Chilman about the way he handles his growing media profile for a feature for their website.
Ben, from near Presteigne in Powys, graduated from his BSc (Hons) Agriculture with Farm Business Management degree at Harper Adamsin September – and was named Ag Student of the Year the following month.
He is now a regular fixture on the BBC, speaking about topics from phosphate levels to Environmental Land Management.
Drawing upon his experience as both a football commentator and in the production of his EweTurn podcast, Ben has a few pointers for fellow farmers when making media appearances.
He said: “I’m always conscious that you don’t want to come across as a moaner, so I do try to be positive.
“Know your key messages, but don’t script it.
“Interviews can be intimidating, even when they’re not live, but if you’re honest about your opinions and positive, that will go a long way.”
Ben is keen to use his experience in agriculture – and his growing media profile – to stand up for British farming and to give the sector’s next generation a voice.
He added: “It’s important the public should hear from young people. The older generations provide the experience, wisdom and knowledge, but the younger generation is the one that will have to drive through changes over the coming decades.”
