Clearing: how Harper Adams can help make you the difference

    12 August 2024

Thousands of students up and down the country will be receiving their results this Thursday – and preparing for their next steps. In this guest blog, our Head of Student Recruitment, Carl Mansell-Griffiths, explains what clearing is all about – and how we can work with you to help you make the most of Thursday and beyond…

This Thursday is results day and the word Clearing will be readily heard throughout the week.

In fact, Clearing - which describes a period when students, upon finding their school or college results, can look at changing their university options – has been running since early July and will carry on after Results Day.

However, this Thursday, as students log on to UCAS to find their grades, will be a key date in the diary for students, schools and universities alike.

Once viewed as the place students went to look for a university if they were unsuccessful, Clearing is now a different space, with students looking to trade up as they get better grades than expected, as well as change their choices and options.

It’s even being used more and more as the first time that some will even apply to University, making a choice of whether to apply based on the outcomes of their exams.

Whatever the reason, it’s important to note that it is becoming more widely used, widely accepted, and is a perfectly normal way for students to explore their choices before finally joining their fellow students at their universities in September.

Universities are also more aware of that than ever, and the importance of this date to students and their supporters and are keen to help students navigate the process and find the right place for them.

We at Harper Adams University have been keen to do the same.

Over the last few weeks, we’ve been making sure we’re available to teachers, parents, supporters and students to answer questions, welcome visitors to explore the campus, and meeting with people to help explore the options ahead. We’ll be doing so after results day, too!

We are changing the World at Harper, but to achieve that, we need curious minds, who can work with us and be shaped by our unique courses and teaching styles to help find solutions to the pressing economic, environmental and health challenges facing our planet.

We’re looking to welcome the next generation of experts in agriculture, engineering, business, food science, animal care, land management, zoology and more, to the University and our courses, to help contribute to our future industries and challenges.

We want to make sure that students can make the right choice therefore, and are able to explore our courses and campus, which is why we’ll have a team of our staff ready to answer our dedicated Clearing Hotline on Results Day and beyond, as well as opportunities to visit the campus on our Applicant Open Days and Campus Tour dates.

Students can find out how we ensure our teaching is future-facing and applied, and how our close links to the industries we serve ensure that we have outstanding employment prospects, with a 97.5 per cent of our full-time UK undergraduates in further work or study after their studies in the latest Graduate Outcomes figures.

This is helped by our extensive industry-led teaching and award-winning placement opportunities with the likes of Morrisons, McDonalds, CLAAS, Saputo and Savills.

So, if you’d like to visit and find out more, it’s not to late to join us at an event, ask the questions you need answering - and study with us from this September.

Together, we will make the difference.

The Harper Adams Clearing Hotline will be running every weekday from 9am to 5pm throughout the month to answer whatever questions you have.

There’ll also be extended hours this week:

    • Between 8am - 6.30pm on Thursday, August 15
    • Between 8am - 6pm on Friday, August 16
