Conference offers Advanced Veterinary Nursing students opportunity to test skills

Students from across a suite of advanced Veterinary Nursing courses at Harper Adams University have been given the opportunity to test their skills at a new conference.

The inaugural Advanced Vet Nursing Skills Camp Conference was held earlier this year and aimed to offer students across the University’s suite of RCVS accredited Advanced Veterinary Nursing courses a chance to both meet fellow learners and try their hand at techniques they had been learning online.

Principal Lecturer and Programme Manager for Veterinary Nursing Susan Howarth said: “We offered the chance to attend the conference to all students on the Advanced Vet Nursing suite of courses, which are delivered online.

“These courses allow students to advance their nursing skills and knowledge in a focus field of study, allowing them to provide enhanced levels of patient and owner support and have their skills better utilised in veterinary practice.

“The conference was held in the Veterinary Education Centre at the University and the day consisted of practical and workshop session to allow students to develop and refine advanced practical nursing skills. 

“As all of the courses are delivered fully online, this practical event allows student the opportunity to network with peers - and receive support and feedback for practical skills which can be difficult online.”

Throughout the day the more than 50 Advanced Vet Nurse students who attended were able to apply their learning, using the breadth of facilities at the University as well as benefitting from the advice, guidance and support of Veterinary Nursing team.

Susan added: “We know that there will be students that are looking to apply to Advanced Veterinary Nursing courses for this coming September. I’m pleased to say that after receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback from our first Skills Camp Conference, this event will now continue each year.
“Harper Adams is the largest provider of RCVS accredited Cert AVN courses, which are aimed at any Registered Veterinary Nurse wishing to develop skills and competencies above and beyond the minimum professional (RCVS) requirements.

“We offer different academic routes that allow all RVNs for any academic background to study with us.”
