Harper Adams University BSc (Hons) Agriculture with Farm Business Management student Jack Elworthy has received the West Country Dairy Award 2017.
The scholarship offers a £2,000 prize for students from Cornwall, Devon, Dorset and Somerset studying dairy industry-related subjects.
Jack, 23, from Golant, Cornwall, said: “I feel greatly honoured to win this award and it’s something I’m very proud of. As a new entrant into dairy farming I’ve come a long way from my first day on the farm aged 14.
"Having the financial backing from the award will allow me to fully focus on my final year at Harper, instead of working full-time during the holidays.
“One day I’ll become a share milker, giving me the opportunity to manage my own business. I hope that by winning this award it’ll show others that you can be successful in the agricultural industry even if you come from a non-farming background. Although I still have a great amount to learn, I feel eternally grateful to those that have supported me.”
Richard Kallaway, chairman of the fund, when presenting the award said: “This year with help from our generous sponsors we have given more than £20,000, a record, to 32 successful applicants, the highest number for six years,”
