Three students on the BSc (Hons) Animal Health and Welfare course have been awarded the RSPCA Farm Animal Welfare Award.

The students; Victoria Gordon, 22 from Cumbria, Chloe Jones, 22 from Powys and Stephanie Teece, 24, from Telford, received the award for producing the best farm animal welfare research project.

Their research project entitled: An alternative to beak trimming in laying hens-Shellac coating treatment.
Their project devised an alternative way of treating laying hens’ beaks to reduce harmful feather pecking that occurs between hens. Course manager, Dr Moira Harris said: “Their new treatment would contribute towards reducing the need for invasive beak trimming.”
