BSc (Hons) Agri-food Marketing with Business Studies student, Sioned Davies, recounts her experience going to the OFC as a scholar.
Sioned,19, from Brecon, Powys said: “One of the most important lessons I have learnt during my first year at Harper is to take every opportunity that’s presented and make the most of it! I was elected as Chairman of the Harper Forum at the end of 1st year and one of the privileges of this role is the opportunity to attend the OFC as a Scholar.
“The OFC is an annual conference held in Oxford for farmers and industry leaders. It’s a unique opportunity for the agricultural industry to come together and discuss the important issues that face modern agriculture.
“This year’s theme is Embracing Change and will look to challenge and inspire the industry. This year for the first time the conference organisers decided to organise a ‘Scholars Day’ which involved bringing all the scholars together to network, meet the sponsors and discover more about the conference.
“I travelled up to Scunthorpe on November 9 and headed to the OSI food solutions building the meet the rest of the Scholars that were attending that day. The day started with an introduction from Matt Naylor the director of the OFC which then led on to a presentation from Alice Willett who is part of the Agricultural team at McDonalds.
“We were then treated to a tour of the OSI Food Solutions facilities where the famous McDonalds burgers are produced and see for ourselves the quality and care that is put in to production. We were then taken to a local McDonald’s restaurant where we experienced what it was like to be a part of the McDonalds team by creating our own Big Mac!
“It was fantastic to be able to meet the Scholars before January and experience the relationship that the OSI Food Solutions and McDonalds have. I am looking forward to attending the conference, networking with industry leaders, and experiencing what the conference has to offer.”
