I would encourage anyone considering a career in the rural sector to come to the open day and sample the Harper experience."
Harper Adams University College will be welcoming prospective students and their families to its Spring Open Day on May 7.
Ready to welcome visitors to the Shropshire campus is Emma Caton, 21 a student currently working as the University College’s Marketing Assistant for her sandwich placement year – a key part of all Harper Adams undergraduate courses.
Emma, whose family run a sheep and beef farm in Otley, near Leeds, is studying towards an honours degree in Business and Tourism Management, and wants to work in events management in the agricultural sector. So organising events at Harper Adams is providing valuable work experience for the former Harrogate Grammar School pupil, who is a member of Farnley Estate Young Farmers (Harrogate District).
Emma, who will return to “normal” university life for her fourth and final year at Harper, said: “I would encourage anyone considering a career in the rural sector to come to the open day and sample the Harper experience. I love studying on a small campus, as part of a close-knit community. It’s really friendly and makes for a great study and social life balance. I’ve made so many friends for life in my three years here.”
The Spring Open Day, which runs from 10am to 4pm, will give visitors a chance to see all of the campus: teaching rooms, new student services centre, farm, dairy unit, small animals unit, vet nursing unit, off-road engineering track, soil hall, teaching labs, lecture theatre, regional food academy and much more.
There will also be talks about the courses on offer – which cover a variety of land-based subjects including agriculture, animals, engineering, food, business, countryside and environment and land management - as well as student life and finance. And visitors will have the opportunity to talk to staff and students informally about studying at the University College and all other aspects of Harper Life.
